BMI Calculatorfor Asian Populations

Calculate your Body Mass Index using WHO Asian-specific thresholds. Asian populations face higher health risks at lower BMI levels than Western populations.

This calculator uses Asian BMI categories recommended by the WHO. Overweight starts at BMI 23 (vs. 25 for Western populations).

Asian BMI Categories

Underweight

BMI Below 18.5

You may be underweight. Consider consulting a doctor about a healthy nutrition plan.

Normal

BMI 18.5 - 22.9

Your BMI is within the healthy range for Asian populations. Maintain your weight with balanced nutrition and regular exercise.

Overweight

BMI 23.0 - 27.4

You are above the healthy weight range for Asian populations. Lifestyle changes and medical guidance may help.

Obese

BMI 27.5 and above

Your BMI indicates obesity by Asian health standards. Medical treatment such as GLP-1 medication may be appropriate.

Why Asian BMI thresholds are different

Research shows that Asian populations develop weight-related health conditions (type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease) at lower BMI levels compared to Western populations. The WHO recommends lower cut-off points: overweight at BMI 23 (vs. 25) and obese at BMI 27.5 (vs. 30).

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are at a healthy weight. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²).

While BMI does not directly measure body fat, it is a useful screening tool that correlates with more direct measures of body fat. Healthcare providers use BMI as one of several factors to assess overall health risk.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²

Example: 72 kg ÷ (1.65 m)² = 26.4

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without excess body fat. BMI also does not account for fat distribution, age, or gender differences. It should be used alongside other health assessments for a complete picture.

When to see a doctor

If your BMI is 23 or above (Asian threshold), consider speaking with a healthcare professional. For those with a BMI of 27.5 or higher, medical treatments like GLP-1 receptor agonists may be recommended as part of a comprehensive weight management plan.
